The Philippine Senate ratified the proposed P3-trillion 2016 national budget on Monday, BusinessWorld reported.

The budget for state colleges and universities was raised by P2.7 billion to P47 billion. The budgets of the Departments of Health, Justice and Transportation and Communications were cut to P124 billion, P13 billion and P43 billion.

The budget of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources was cut by P1 billion. Still, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Loren Legarda, who is known for championing environmental causes, welcomed the approval. She said the bill has provisions targeted at  environmental and heritage conservation.

She expressed confidence that President Aquino would be able to sign the 2016 budget into law before Christmas, according to a Philippine Star report.
