A free super-speed wireless fidelity (WiFi) connection has been made available for passengers traveling through the Tagbilaran Airport in Bohol. The Internet connection is a courtesy of a tie-up among Smart Communications, its parent company, PLDT Inc. and Trans Aire Development Holdings, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation (SMC).

Free WiFi

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) announced on Monday that the partnership provides free access on the Smart WiFi which has an Internet speed of one gigabyte per second (1 Gbps). It will enable passengers to launch uninterrupted video conferences through their WiFi-enabled devices and download large contents while in the airport. It will also allow tourists to browse on the Internet to scout for tourism sites in Bohol and accomplish last-minute assignments before they set off for vacation.

102 days of Duterte administration

According to PIA, the ceremonial tapping of the super-speed WiFi connection came 102 days after President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office and 77 days after his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) wherein he announced plans to offer free WiFi access in selected public areas.

PLDT Assistant Vice President and Head of the Enterprise Service Fulfillment Management Harold Kim Orbase said that the country’s telecommunication companies are obliged, following the call of President Duterte, to invest in public-private partnership (PPP) projects as free Internet connection.

More airport connections

Tagbilaran Airport is among the airports in the country which have been provided with free Internet connection. The Bohol airport has joined other populated areas including airports in Dumaguete in Negros Oriental, Iloilo City in Panay, Kalibo in Aklan, Roxas City in Capiz which have been installed with the Smart WiFi.

The free internet access is reported to be backed by Smart-PLDT’s wireless and fixed-line network infrastructure and is among the close to P1 billion investment of PLDT to come up with the framework for a Smart WiFi. It forms a part of Smart’s three-year massive network modernization program in brace for the expected growth in data traffic.
