Earthquakes have been hitting the Philippines lately, with the latest ones rocking Batangas, Northern Samar and Ilocos Sur on Monday morning. The magnitudes range from 2.9 to 5.4, with some minor aftershocks mostly felt in the Batangas area. Read on to learn more about the Philippine earthquakes 2017 update.

Here are three fast facts about the recent earthquakes that hit the Philippines today:

1. A 2.9 magnitude earthquake hit Agoncillo, Batangas at 11:09 am on Monday, April 10.

 According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was tectonic in origin. It had a depth of 034 kilometers (km). Its location was recorded at 13.91 degrees North, 120.90 degrees East,  005 km South and  56 degrees West of Agoncillo, Batangas.

"A tectonic earthquake occurs when strains in rock masses have accumulated to a point where the resulting stresses exceed the strength of the rocks, and sudden fracturing results," Britannica.com notes. There are no expected damage or aftershocks from this particular earthquake, PHIVOLCS said in its report.

2. An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 also rocked Palapag, Northern Samar at 8:43 am.

Like the recent Batangas earthquake, the origin of this tremor is also tectonic and it occurred on the same day. Its exact location was 13.11 degrees North, 125.49 degrees East, 074 km North and 33 degrees East of Palapag in Northern Samar. Its depth was at 017 km.

Intensity III was felt in Palapag, while Intensity II was felt in the areas of Catarman, Northern Samar as well as in Panganiban, Catanduanes and Cabid-an and Juban in Sorsogon. Meanwhile, Intensity I was recorded in Tacloban City. PHIVOLCS warned that aftershocks are expected to occur, however, they are not expecting damage.

3. A 3.7 magnitude earthquake hit Sinait, Ilocos Sur at 8:18 am.

The location of the earthquake was at 17.92 degrees North, 120.34 degrees East, 013 km North and 66 degrees West of Sinait in Ilocos Sur. Its depth was recorded by PHIVOLCS at 022 km and its origin was also tectonic, like the earthquakes in Batangas and Northern Samar.

Intensity III was felt in Vigan, Sinait as well as in Bantay, Ilocos Sur. In terms of instrumental Intensities, Intensity I was recorded in Pasuquin and Laoag, Ilocos Norte and in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. According to PHIVOLCS, they are not expecting damage or aftershocks from this earthquake. 

Latest update on Philippine earthquakes 2017

PHIVOLCS said in its latest report that a 2.5 magnitude earthquake hit the country again at 11;35 am. It was recorded 12.82 degrees North, 124.16 degrees East, 005 km South and 16 degrees East of Barcelona in Sorsogon. There are no expected aftershocks or damage.
