Palm Sunday 2016, which was celebrated on Sunday, March 20, is the final Sunday of Lent. It marks the start of the Holy Week and its observance celebrates the arrival of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, days before He was crucified. This holiday is celebrated by almost all Christian denominations.

It is referred to as Palm Sunday because palm fronds are waved by churchgoers to the priest when the arrival of Christ in Jerusalem is reenacted. The reason why palm branches are used during this time instead of other plants is because these are recognized as symbols of victory and peace, according to Catholic Online

Mass on Palm Sunday uses the colors red and white, which symbolizes the redemption in blood that Christ paid for the world. Pope Francis led the Palm Sunday services on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square. He spoke about the fate of refugees in his homily and appealed to the nations not to turn their backs on them.

The palm fronds are blessed by the priest and maybe kept in their homes for a year, or returned to the church. The following year, they are gathered at the church and burned. Its ashes will be used for Ash Wednesday.

After Palm Sunday, Jesus spent time with the Gentiles in the Temple. On Wednesday, he left Jerusalem to go to the Mount of Olives. On Thursday, aka Maundy Thursday, Jesus returned to Jerusalem for the Last Supper with His apostles. After that, He was arrested and tried. Jesus was crucified on Friday at Calvary. He died and was buried on the same day. Three days later, He rose from the dead on Easter Sunday.
