Nickelodeon has announced plans to build an underwater theme park in Palawan, alarming a group of environmentalists. Save Philippine Seas (SPS), the organization who created a campaign against it, believe it would destroy marine ecosystems in the island known as the Philippines’ last ecological frontier.
‘No to Nickelodeon's Underwater Theme Park in Palawan’
In a campaign, SPS executive director Anna Oposa expressed disappointment over the plans of Nickelodeon to build an undersea park in Coron, an infamous tourist spot in northern Palawan. Oposa said the underwater resort and theme park will damage and disrupt the marine ecosystem in Palawan, in contrary to the statement that it would advocate ocean protection.
“For a channel that targets children, Nickelodeon is setting a terrible example to the younger generation by taking away their right to enjoy our natural resources,” Oposa wrote in the petition. “We don't need an underwater theme park -- our underwater life is fascinating, entertaining, and educational on its own,” the environmentalist finished.

The American children's television network, the creator of most loved characters Spongebob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer, said the park in Palawan would be part of a 400-hectare undersea development showcasing the area’s marine life that would give fans a chance to interact with the brand and the iconic characters they love.
In a statement to the AFP, Viacom International Media Networks executive vice president Ron Johnson said Palawan was chosen for the development as it is known to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world today. He disclosed the resort would open in 2020 and feature restaurants and lounges six meters below sea level.
As of this writing, the petition has already gained more than 80,000 signatures in barely a day since it was posted. The letter, which is addressed to the Palawan local government, Coral World Park Undersea Resorts Inc., and Viacom, which owns the Nickelodeon, aims to reach 100,000 signatures.
