Facebook (FB) has recently launched a new product known as "City Guides." It aims to provide various travel suggestions so that visitors no longer need to go to other sites in order to better plan their trips.

"This content already exists on Facebook, and during this test we’ll be centralizing it in a way that is more personalized and relevant to you," The Next Web reported a Facebook spokesperson as saying. "So, this new feature can help people get a better sense of their city, or a city they’re visiting through their friends’ eyes."

The Next Web was the first to break the news about the Facebook "City Guides" being released to a larger market recently. The feature was reportedly released to limited customers back in December. "City Guides" works by providing users with suggestions on various events and places that they can visit in a particular area. At the same time, this feature would also readily show users which of their friends would be attending the same event. This makes dates and get-togethers a lot easier to plan. As some reports have noted, "City Guides" looks to be Facebook's own version of Trip Advisor that is able to leverage its huge member base.

Facebook "City Guides" tells you where your friends have been

For those who want to try the new Facebook "City Guides" feature, all they have to do is access the Explore tab of their FB app. Upon clicking an individual city, users will immediately see who among their friends have visited the destination. Moreover, tapping into each friend will also reveal the places that they have been to in the said area. These include attractions, hotels, restaurants as well as other businesses.

On the other hand, the new feature also offers a list labeled "Places the Locals Go." This list curates all the highly rated spots in the area. According to a report from Tech Crunch, Facebook utilizes technology to summarize what users are generally saying about a specific spot. In case users want to remember the spot, all they have to do is use the bookmark icon located on the right side of the app. Using the bookmark feature puts the spot in the user's "Saved" section. It can easily become a bucket list of spots you want to check out.

The new Facebook feature is currently still limited in availability

For the moment, it seems the relatively new Facebook "City Guides" is only focusing on several major cities around the world. The FB feature is also not yet available to all the social network giant's users. "We’re testing a redesigned surface on city Pages that showcases information about your city," a Facebook spokesperson further remarked.
