Duterte’s Kitchen, a small eatery in Cubao named after President Rodrigo Duterte, is searching for more volunteers and donors who will help feed and educate street children in Cubao. The free food center, launched on Oct. 10, currently serves free meals to around 50 to 70 street children daily.

Duterte’s Kitchen serves free food for street kids

The establishment, located in a building along EDSA, across Farmer’s Plaza, was mainly decided by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez in support of the president’s national feeding program for the poor. It is run by the ruling Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), fueled by the donations and help from donors and volunteers who believe in the advocacy of extending help to the underprivileged people.

In their first weeks, Duterte’s Kitchen only provided food for the street children with only lugaw (rice porridge) or champorado (chocolate rice porridge) in their menu. When donations came flooding in, they have started to attend to hungry adults as well – serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Aside from providing food to the needy, the project is also holding learning and gaming activities for kids. The organizers aim to bring the Kitchen nationwide to reach out to more children roaming the streets. However, in order to do so, they require more volunteers and donors who will support the initiative.

Here are 5 ways you can help and support the initiatives of Duterte’s Kitchen.

1. Teach street children how to read and write, every Monday to Friday, 6 to 8 pm.

2. Teach street children how to play a musical instrument, every Monday to Friday, 6 to 8 pm.

3. Feed and engage with street children as they eat, 7 am to 12 noon, 1 pm to 6 pm.

4. Donate in-kind goods.

5. Volunteer for work.

It pays to take note that Duterte’s Kitchen only accepts donations in-kind and volunteer work. The initiative is envisioned to provide a comprehensive temporary shelter for street children, where they can be provided with food, emergency medical care and basic education in the future.

Those who are interested to donate food or do volunteer work, can reach the organizers through their Facebook Page: Duterte’s Kitchen.
