The Department of Health (DOH) reported the first case of Zika Virus infecting a pregnant woman in the Philippines. The infected woman is already the 12th confirmed patient of Zika virus within the country as the health department reported additional three cases on Monday.

Here are three fast facts about the first case of Zika virus infecting pregnant woman in the Philippines.

1. The unnamed woman is 22 years old from Cebu. She is 19 weeks pregnant with her first child.

“We conducted an initial ultrasound test to check for fetal abnormalities, particularly in the central nervous system. None were detected,” Philippine Daily Inquirer reported Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial, as saying.

Gundo Weiler, World Health Organization representative in the Philippines, said that the risk could be higher if the patient was infected during the first trimester. However, he added that there could be “consequences if the infection occurs at the later stage.”

The effect of Zika virus to pregnant women could be dangerous, as they may give birth to babies with microcephaly, a deformation marked by abnormally small brains and heads.

2. The expectant mother will be monitored regularly during the entire period of her pregnancy.

Health officials said that there is no cure or vaccine for Zika virus, even including women who are infected while pregnant. DOH said that the infected woman will be checked more frequently than the regular check-ups every pregnant woman should have.

“We will have more frequent check-ups, which is every two weeks,” Ubial said.

3. DOH advises pregnant women to use mosquito repellents or mosquito nets especially during daytime. No travel ban was issued by the department.

“We do not recommend travel ban to affected areas since Zika and the mosquito that carries it is actually endemic in the Philippines – it's found all over the country,” Ubial said.
